The Sleeping Position and the Child Sleep Disorder
Have you ever heard that a childs sleeping position is a sign of a sleeping disorder? Read on and learn more about this fascinating discovery. One of my favorite photos is of a baby dressed as an angel sleeping soundly in a buttocks-up-head-down position. Kids seem like angels when they sleep no matter what sleeping position they adopt. It looks odd especially seeing a child sleeping with his eyes open but they look cute anyway. But do you know that sleeping in weird positions make a child a candidate for sleep disorders? I didnt believe this at first but there is definitely some truth to this. Studies show that there is a connection between childrens sleeping positions and sleep disorders.
Remember the picture of the sleeping baby angel I mentioned earlier? If a child sleeps in this position it is possible that he may resort to a strange own-hair-pulling behavior later on in life. For kids who seem to sleep better with heads hanging down and refuse to budge from this position, they may develop body rocking sleep disorder.
Night asthma attacks are associated with kids who sleep in an arched position. However, you should be keen and observant enough to know when your kid started sleeping in this odd position. If this happened after an accident or head trauma this can be a sign of a more serious problem like excessive intracranial pressure. Ever heard of the expression sleeping like a log? Some kids go to a very relaxed state as if barely breathing and sometimes you try to double check just to make sure they are alive. This is quite frightening for moms. Children like this are prone to develop bed wetting and sleep apnea or even head banging later on in life. We cant help but suppress a giggle when we encounter sleep walking and sleep talking kids. My computer freak son who I thought was sleeping soundly one night, suddenly bolted upright and mimicked a sword fighting scene complete with a few garbled lines from one of his online games. A few seconds later he went back to bed. Researches showed that kids who sleep with outstretched arms may indicate a prospective sleepwalker and/or sleep talking disorder. A kid who sleeps with eyes open may fool the people around him into thinking he is awake. Although research is still inconclusive as to what sleep disorder this is associated with, parents nonetheless are bothered.
Early detection is still the key to curing sleep disorders. By heeding possible signs through a childs odd sleeping habits, a more serious problem can be addressed before it gets worse.
